The
Food Bank for Monterey County,
a certified America's Second Harvest food bank, is the largest
supplier of emergency food in Monterey County. We distribute
5 million pounds of food annually.
We are a non-profit private
organization whose mission is "…to lead community efforts
in the awareness and elimination of hunger in Monterey County."
To accomplish this mission, we solicit, collect, store,
and then distribute food throughout the County by several
means: (1) Agency Clearinghouse, a network of 67 non-profit
food assistance agencies; (2) direct giving programs such
as Emergency Food Assistance and the Family Market. (Click
on Programs
for more details.)
The Food Bank for Monterey
County is situated on California's central coast in the
city of Salinas in an area known as the "Salad Bowl
of the World." Agriculture and the hospitality industry
dominate the economy of the Central Coast and the national
image of our area is one of wealth and beauty. However,
hunger, poverty, high unemployment, and food insecurity
exist.
There is hunger in Monterey
County. The challenge is great and we strive to meet it
on a daily basis.
