Hunger 101: a Role-Playing Workshop

Volunteers: Making a Better Tomorrow Today!

We are very fortunate at the Food Bank to have more than 300 dedicated volunteers that give thousands of hours every year.

Volunteers range in age from 10 years old to their 90s. Our volunteers are critical to the Food Bank’s operations; they do everything from picking up day-old bread at local retailers and distributing food to our clients to ensuring to sorting our donations and being a vital asset to our office team.

Hunger 101: a role-playing workshop

The Food Bank for Monterey County offers "Hunger 101," an interactive role-playing experience, to schools, businesses and other community groups.

Using the demographics of Monterey County, each person assumes an identity based on the experiences of persons with no or low income. Then they receive a budget worksheet and calculate what remains for food, after paying bills.

The goal in "Hunger 101" is to obtain enough food to feed yourself and your family for one day given your limited household budget. The scenario allows participants to access a mock food stamp office, a soup kitchen, a grocery, and a food bank.

This workshop helps people to understand the challenges of having a low income in Monterey County. After the decisions have been made about how to spend food money, the floor is open to discussion and comments.

Our experience with "Hunger 101" has been overwhelmingly positive. People call it "a real eye opener" and say it promotes a "renewal" of understanding.

Allowing for some discussion, the basic workshop takes 50 minutes and is best with 25 to 40 participants. We can, however, customize this presentation for your group.

To arrange for a session of "Hunger 101" or to ask further questions, please call Lee Hulquist at the Food Bank for Monterey County at (831) 758-1523 or (800) 870-FOOD (870-3663) or email lhulquist@food4hungry.org. (There is no charge for this workshop.)

"Hunger 101" is a scenario that originated with the Atlanta Food Bank and is now used by many food banks in California.
